Introduction

Why I started this project:

  • I have been burning wood for many years. Wood is an abundant source of fuel in many parts of the country. I have rarely ever had to pay for a load of wood. It can be a lot of work to haul, split, stack, unstack, move, etc. But it is also good for the soul, puts you in touch with nature, and if you've had a bad day, there is no better way to let off some anxiety than with a good swing of the maul.
My son Nick with the mother of all oaks (not a real rifle).
  • I have a smaller size wood stove, fireplace insert as shown on the cover of this blog. It has a damper at the base which allows air flow into the firebox. This wood stove has served me well over the years. I live in a split level house and the lower level family room would be normally cool in the winter months. So for that primary reason, I burn wood to keep this space warm. It heats about 1/2 of my house.
  • But..., the damper control is a bit of a fuss. I'll often leave for work and wonder "Did I shut the damper?", "Is the fire going to stay lit?" If I can automate the damper, the wood would burn in a more regulated fashion. So, project "Smart Stove" was launched.
